I once had a friend say she wanted to cosplay but couldn’t because she was “too brown.” And that was the single most upsetting thing that I ever heard because you can’t be “too anything” (except broke) to cosplay. It’s a community of craftsmen who uplift and help one another achieve their goals, and it’s a lot more social than sitting it my garage and making poorly constructed boxes from wood with my dad.

Typically, you would do this to avoid changing your physical appearance to cosplay a character of the opposite gender. So, you would portray a male version of a female character and vice versa. I met up with my genderbent Hades and suddenly we could hardly take two steps without being stopped. A genderbent costume is when you change the perceived gender of a character you are cosplaying. I actually had to pattern the rectangles on the skirt myself because I didn’t like how the store patterns showed it.Īt first, it was a little underwhelming, but that’s to be expected when you’re at a con before noon. I sewed the costume myself, Frankenstein-ing some patterns together.
I also really like it when costumes hardly change between their male and female versions, so Hercules was a great choice because he wore a skirt either way! I saw several versions of genderbent Disney characters, and since Disney is close to my heart, I decided to give it a shot.
