Released in March 2020, the album made a strong showing on the Billboard 200 (hitting number five) and earned praise from the likes of Taylor Swift and Elton John. Conan Gray is teasing what assumedly is a new song, 'Checkmate', with a release date this week of June 26th. Throughout 2019, Gray released a string of singles, including "Checkmate," "Comfort Crowd," and "Maniac." All of these were included on his full-length debut, the Daniel Nigro-produced Kid Krow. In 2018, he released his debut EP, Sunset Season, which featured the singles "Generation Why" and "Crush Culture."
But with 2017's "Grow" and "Idle Town," he showcased a move to a more fleshed-out sound, mixing in synth and minor electronic flourishes. Initially, early songs like "Those Days," "Lovesick Boys," and "The Other Side" were more barebones, showcasing his voice and ukulele or guitar. He continued to build his online presence, adding original pop songs to his repertoire. He found similar success on other social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and SoundCloud.Īfter high school, Gray relocated to Los Angeles, where he enrolled at UCLA. Posting vlogs about his life, his interest in art, and acoustic cover songs, he built a loyal following, gaining upwards of 900,000 subscribers. After his parents' divorce, he moved to Texas with his mother and at age 15 launched his YouTube channel (originally called ConanXCanon). He also spent time living in Hiroshima, Japan while his parents cared for his grandfather.
